<cal:ev_description>HEALTHY LAKES HEALTHY LIVES TOUR COMING TO TRAVERSE CITY

The Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives Tour will be coming to Traverse City this summer, and we would love to get you involved! In short, the Healthy Lakes Tour will be taking a high profile boat (the Earth Voyager) to 12 port cities from Buffalo to Chicago to raise awareness for Great Lakes restoration and the need for federal funding to accomplish the task. The Healthy Lakes Tour will be in Traverse City on July 24-27, 2008. We would like to thank the City of Traverse City for partnering on this event.

For those of you who have been involved in our initial planning stages of the Healthy Lakes Tour, THANK YOU and please read below for an update. For those of you who are just learning of this event, please read below for ways in which you can get involved.
BACKGROUND

To give you a little background, the purpose of the Healthy Lakes Tour is to:
Raise the importance of Great Lakes Restoration to a national priority
Use press conferences to have legislators voice support for the Great Lakes Regional Strategy http://epa.gov/greatlakes/collaboration/strategy.html.
Have the keynote speaker refer to the Brookings Institution report Healthy Lakes, Strong Economy: The Benefits of Restoring the Great Lakes Ecosystem, which cites a short-term 2 to 1 return on investment, and a long-term 3 to 1 return on investment. http://www.healthylakes.org/site_upload/upload/GrtLakesCostBenefit.pdf
Mobilize public opinion for restoration
Unite Industry and Conservation groups to support restoration based on the mutual benefit of economic and environmental revitalization.
Highlight and celebrate successful restoration projects in and around the ports of call.
Give ports the unique opportunity to network organizations that don’t usually cross paths.
Please take a look at the attached file from the Healing Our Waters Coalition for more information on the rationale behind the Healthy Lakes Tour.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED

There are a variety of ways for you and your organizations to become involved with the Healthy Lakes Tour. Here are just a few:
Plan to join us for the morning reception on July 25 at the Great Lakes Campus. We will be in touch with a formal invitation that will include more details on this event.
Consider hosting a booth and/or hands-on activity as part of the Bay Day event on July 26 in conjunction with The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay. This is a great way to highlight the work of your organization, promote Great Lakes stewardship and celebrate the water resources in our own community. Sarah U’Ren and I will be refining some of the details of this day, and would appreciate your input.
If you are involved in a sailing/boating operation, or if you have a personal boat, join the flotilla send-off on July 27. We’ll be in touch with more details on this as the Earth Voyager schedule is finalized.
Join the planning team. We could use some additional help in planning the events of the Healthy Lakes Tour. You may have ideas of additional activities that you would like to incorporate into the event and that would be fantastic. If you are interested in helping with the planning process, let me know and we can talk about specific needs.
Spread the word! Please forward this information on to others that you think might like to become involved, and post it on your community calendars.
THANK YOU’S

We would like to extend a special thank you to the Healthy Lakes Tour organizers, Janice Littlefield and Peter Alexander, for selecting Traverse City as one of their ports of call. We would also like to thank the City of Traverse City for partnering on this event with us. Thank you to the participants of the April 10 planning meeting from Michigan SeaGrant, Inland Seas Education Association, The Watershed Center, Michigan DNR and Bioneers, and to those of you who could not attend the meeting but who have since made a commitment to help make this event a success. Thanks also to Sarah U'Ren for taking the lead on the Bay Day events.

This is a great opportunity to bring attention to the Great Lakes and to our community – and we couldn’t make it happen without all of you. We will be in touch with more details as these events are further developed. We just wanted to give you all some background on the Healthy Lakes Tour and to encourage you all to get involved!
